At the 17th Conference of Waste Management Agencies (Fo.D.S.A.), Mr. Vasilis Vyzyrgiannakis, Development Director of THALIS, emphasized the critical role of completing Municipal Solid Waste management infrastructure and transforming Waste Treatment Units (WTUs) into Material Recovery and Recycling Facilities (MRRFs). These actions are essential for achieving recycling targets and producing high-quality refuse-derived fuels.
Mr. Vyzyrgiannakis also stressed the urgent need for a stable investment environment capable of attracting large-scale private sector investments, aiming to fully utilize recovered materials and drive the transition to a Circular Economy.
In his speech, Mr. V.Vyzyrgiannakis stated:
“To meet the EU targets, we must place High-Quality Recycling at the forefront, focusing on the recovery of high-purity, commercially valuable materials, ready for reuse. Energy recovery can have a complementary role, but it should remain the final stage, applied only to waste residues where material recovery as raw materials is technically or economically unfeasible.
At THALIS, we are focusing our efforts both on completing the infrastructure and transforming Waste Treatment Units into Material Recovery and Recycling Facilities, and on implementing private recycling investments, while exploring opportunities in energy recovery from waste.”
