Published : November 10th, 2025

Mr. V. Vizyrgiannakis, Development Director of THALIS, speaking at the panel “Investments to Address Water Scarcity” during the “Green Deal Greece 2025” Conference, highlighted the crucial importance of water reuse for irrigation and industrial purposes.

Emphasizing the need for Greece to reach the levels achieved by other countries, he referred to the pioneering project implemented by THALIS on behalf of the Heraklion Water and Sewerage Authority (DEYAH) in Crete. This flagship project will convert over 10 million cubic meters of urban wastewater into clean water suitable for irrigation, while the construction of 30 km of irrigation networks and 5 storage reservoirs will cover the irrigation needs of more than 3,000 hectares of farmland and green areas.

Finally, he underlined the economic viability of this solution, noting that the low production cost makes water reuse an efficient and sustainable investment for the local community and the agricultural economy.
